T-Mobile USA has announced the imminent launch of the T-Mobile Shadow, which could prove to be a rival to Apple’s iPhone.
It is designed for ease-of-use but loses none of the features of a modern multi-use phone, said T-Mobile, which will launch the Shadow on October 31st.

T-Mobile teamed up with design firm HTC to integrate style and function, making it more ‘intuitive’ for customers.

Features include an enhanced user-interface that is integrated with the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 platform, a two-megapixel digital camera and Wi-Fi internet access.

‘We’re calling the new line of devices Shadow because they’re designed to help people stay effortlessly connected with those who are closest to them,’ said T-Mobile president Robert Dotson.

‘Shadow finally makes staying connected to people simple, fun and easy - and all without the hassle of using a complicated device.’

Last month, T-Mobile announced that more than two million customers have signed up to its Flext tariff since its launch 18 months ago.

Security software company Sophos has revealed that the US relays more spam than any other country in the world.

Websites in the US are responsible for 28.4 per cent of all spam, followed by South Korea with 5.2 per cent and China, including Hong Kong, with 4.9 per cent.

Russia, Brazil and France are the fourth, fifth and sixth worst respectively for relaying spam, the Sophos report revealed.

Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos, said: ‘It seems as though a major American spammer is arrested every other week at the moment, but despite these high-profile lawbreakers being put away, the US continues to relay far more spam than any other nation on the planet.’

The spamming is not just the work of a few cyber criminals, but represents thousands of people controlling thousands of zombie computers, added Ms Theriault.

Recently, a security report from the Georgia Tech Information Security Centre warned that online videos are the new favoured way for cyber criminals to hide malicious code.

Handheld PCs that are as powerful as laptops could soon be available thanks to a breakthrough at the University of Edinburgh.

By studying the behaviours of nanoscale wires and a creating a tool that can develop tiny microchips, researchers believe that mini-PCs could one day be on the high street.

Experts at the university have developed a computer program that allows engineers to predict and avoid problems with wires in a matchbox-sized supercomputer.

Dr Michael Zaiser, of Edinburgh’s school of engineering and electronics, said: ‘What we found is when we made these wires smaller and smaller they started to behave in a very funny way.

‘Holding a supercomputer in the palm of your hand will one day be possible - and we are going to make sure all the wires are in the right place.’

It is thought that the micro-PCs would be the size of a mobile phone and would therefore be smaller than Microsoft’s Ultra-Mobile PCs, which has a seven-inch touchscreen display.

It has emerged that a hacker broke into the eBay server last week, although the online auction company claims that the situation was under control very quickly.

A spokeswoman for eBay said that the hacker was stopped before any lasting damage was done and she ensured members that no financial information was accessed.

Last month, a hacker known as Vladuz posted the names of over a 1,000 eBay members, along with invalid credit card numbers, on a discussion forum.

‘As we continue to lock down on the traditional ways that bad guys have attempted to exploit our system, it is only natural that they will look for new ways to get in,’ the eBay spokeswoman told PC Advisor.

‘It is an ongoing battle,’ she added.

There are suspicions that the latest hack is the responsibility of Vladuz, whose real identity unknown, although the fraudster is thought to live in Romania.

Many businesses are less prepared than they think when it comes to using Web 2.0 technologies, a new survey has suggested.

While almost 97 per cent of companies polled by Forrester Research for Secure Computing said they believed themselves to be ready for internet threats, more than two-thirds admitted to needing to do more.

And when asked how regularly they fall foul of malware attacks, 79 per cent of respondents said they did so frequently.

‘The need to keep inappropriate content at bay, reduce non-business bandwidth consumption and limit exposure to internet threats gave rise to the industry of web filtering,’ the report stated.

It added: ‘The need for more effective web protection has never been greater.’

Earlier this week, Antti Ohrling, founder of mobile firm Blyk, told the MediaGuardian Changing Advertising Summit that experts were wrong to assume that Web 2.0 could enjoy the same level of success on mobile phones as it has done on the traditional internet, the Guardian reports.
