Cheapest UK broadband prices

According to consumer comparison website uSwitch, prices for broadband in the UK have fallen 36 per cent in the past four years while average speeds have risen from 0.5Mbps to 8Mbps.

The experts at uSwitch say no one should have to pay more than £20 per month for standalone broadband, yet nearly five million consumers are still on old contracts a cost of £163 million per year.

The report showed Orange as the having the most expensive broadband for the past five years, while Virgin Media had the fastest services and has just announced it will offer 50Mbps connections next year.

Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch, recommended that anyone without a contract should take advantage of the low prices as soon as possible in the new year.

“We predict that prices will stabilise,” he said, “but customers will be offered more for their money as ISPs continue to increase

    You mention Orange anw Virgin Media - what about BT?? The cheap broadband package - Option1 that I subscribe to offers fast downloads starting at £8.95 a month.

    @Roger Humm,

    I just check uSwitch and BT is not even listed as one that can be compared directly.

    Having said that I jut compared the different providers both on uswitch.com and thinkbroadband.com, It appears the cheapest is actually O2 with £90 for 12 contract for 8Mb unlimited transfer (**Subject to providers fair usage policy). Compared with your BT Option 1 will set you back £270 by the end of 18 month contract.

    In my opinion I rather pay that £90 to O2 for 12 months and by end of it I am sure price will drop even more so I can switch to some other contract and save even more.

    As rule of thumb, I found that both broadband and mobile phone contract price drops every 12 months, or at least you get a better deal for your money. Knowing that I’d never recommend anyone sign-up to a 18 months contract, as it ties you up the provider for additional 6 months where you can effectively get a better deal and also save money.
