Powerset SEO tool the future?

A new online tool could change the way that search engine optimisation (SEO) works in ranking websites.

Currently SEO conducted by engines including Google works by comparing key words defined by the searcher with the related words in online articles and ranking them in the order of the most viewed.

However, a new tool called Powerset could change this by comparing the natural language of the content rather than simply the key words. This is done by ‘unlocking’ the meaning encoded in ordinary human language.

The first Powerset was launched last month to improve the search process on Wikipedia. The system promises to give more accurate results and to frequently answer questions directly.

‘Powerset’s goal is to change the way people interact with technology by enabling computers to understand our language … We believe that now is the right time to begin the journey,’ the San Francisco company states.

In related news, it has been reported that physicians competing for the top internet search ranking have found it more successful and economical to take the SEO route rather than using expensive links.

Domain names can falsely lure users

The type of domain name that a website uses is not necessarily authorised any more, it has been claimed, and can be attained by almost anyone.

Record sales of certain domain names with popular key words highlight the importance of the name of site, yet communications supplier Pipex Hosting has stated that these names are often not actually what they describe.

While there was an original number of rules designed to control what group was classified as an organisation and which were considered a business, Macsen Galvin, development director of Pipex Hosting said today “a lot of registries took a very laissezy-faire kind of approach to see how [the internet] would grow”.

Mr Galvin explained that for a “.org” domain name, a group must in theory be a non-commercial organisation, but in practice “people will go and get a ‘.org’ address if their choice of a ‘.com’ or ‘.co.uk’ isn’t available“.

Users can be confused about which sites are true to their domain names and while Mr Galvin said some sites like the “.kids.us” registrar enforce strict codes for using certain domains, the ones that do not could cause users to be suspicious of any website they use in the future.
