Network Solutions defends internet address redress

Network Solutions, a domain name firm that registers internet addresses used in its own searches, said it is doing nothing wrong and in fact prevents domain name scams.

The company said it prevented so-called front running, in which scammers take advantage of a five-day trial period domain names without paying for them.

This is a customer protection measure to protect customers from frontrunners,” said Susan Wade, spokeswoman for Network Solutions.

The company has attracted negative attention however because it tracks terms entered into its search field and registers them itself before selling them for a higher fee.

Vice president of the company, Jonathan Nevett, said in response: “Due to no fault of registrars, front runners purchase search data from internet service providers and/or registries and then taste those names.

“Some folks may not agree with our approach,” he said, “but we are trying to prevent this malicious activity from impacting our customers.”

Nintendo Wii in short supply

Computer game fanatics hoping to open a Nintendo Wii on Christmas day could be left feeling disappointed as high street retailers are reporting shortages of the bestselling console.

Shops are currently struggling to keep up with demand from consumers, the BBC reports, and many people who put in advance orders for the console have not yet received the gadget.

Nintendo has insisted that it was “doing everything possible” to rectify the situation, shipping out around 3.5 extra consoles around the globe.

The demand for Wii hardware globally has been unprecedented and higher than Nintendo could ever have anticipated,” a spokeswoman told the BBC.

“Nintendo is now in a position in which seasonality demand trends are being broken, therefore the demand for Wii hardware is constant throughout the whole year globally.

“Due to this phenomenon it is possible that the demand for Wii hardware may outstrip supply,” she said.

Bad news for one games console maker is good news for another, with Sony reporting that US sales of its PlayStation have doubled in the past few weeks thanks to a recent price cut.

Sony recently sold 100,000 PS3s in just seven days.

eBay ‘hit by hacker’

It has emerged that a hacker broke into the eBay server last week, although the online auction company claims that the situation was under control very quickly.

A spokeswoman for eBay said that the hacker was stopped before any lasting damage was done and she ensured members that no financial information was accessed.

Last month, a hacker known as Vladuz posted the names of over a 1,000 eBay members, along with invalid credit card numbers, on a discussion forum.

‘As we continue to lock down on the traditional ways that bad guys have attempted to exploit our system, it is only natural that they will look for new ways to get in,’ the eBay spokeswoman told PC Advisor.

It is an ongoing battle,’ she added.

There are suspicions that the latest hack is the responsibility of Vladuz, whose real identity unknown, although the fraudster is thought to live in Romania.
